A flue liner is recommended for all properties where the condition of the flue brickwork or mortar may be in question. A bird guard or bird deterrent should be fitted to the top of the chimney to prevent birds nesting.
Chimneys must terminate at least 1 8 meters 6 feet above the thatch. The flue liner must be insulated so that heat from the flue is not transferred to the thatch. Install a suitable flue liner defects in chimney stacks such as open joints cracks and missing bricks which allow hot gases and sparks to escape into the thatch are another proven cause of fire. This year we have helped plumbers on three separate roofs put boiler flue pipes through the existing thatch.
The air around a flue liner inside the chimney stack will become warm while the stove is in use and therefore any defects in the chimney brickwork at thatch level could pose a risk. It is advisable for a cctv inspection of the flue be carried out to identify defects. The threat can be eliminated by lining the flue. The method of relining a thatched roof chimney for a log burner is covered in detail by part j of the uk building regulations.
All the pipes come with either an attached lead collar as in this case or a stainless steel coloured slate with rubber collar to weatherproof the join between the thatch and the pipe. This will reduce the risk of hot gases escaping from the flue into adjoining thatch.
