Ford Transit Connect Side Door Will Lock But Not Unlock

When you then try to lock the van by pressing the lock button it relocks the rear doors and beeps the horn to say a door not closed.

One last ditch attempt yesterday saw me applying pressure clockwise to the lock unlock knob on the inside and a mate opening and closting the handle on the outside and after a couple of minutes click it went in and now the side door opens.
